With Myself, Through Winter

by Jane Yu

With Myself, Through Winter captures a quiet transformation—a visual meditation on duality, solitude, and the emergence of spring after a long winter of emotional turbulence.

Shot in March 2025, during Jane Yu's first spring in New York, the series reflects a moment of internal reckoning. Torn between perfectionism and chaos, restlessness and stillness, the artist turns her lens inward to construct two versions of the self: adversary and companion, observer and observed.

Through soft focus, translucent layers, and poetic framing, the photographs evoke emotional distance while inviting intimacy. Figures behind curtains, reflections through windows, distant gestures on grass—each image suggests a quiet confrontation, a fragile equilibrium between conflicting selves.

In this gentle, lingering spring rain, as all things come back to life, so does the photographer.

With Myself, Through Winter I

A soft, dreamlike figure stands behind sheer white curtains, holding a red apple. The translucent fabric creates emotional distance while the apple—vivid and symbolic—anchors the composition in quiet tension. This image evokes themes of temptation, vulnerability, and self-awareness, as the figure gazes through layers of separation, neither fully hidden nor fully revealed.

With Myself, Through Winter II

Viewed from above through a window frame, two figures stand on grass, reaching toward each other in a gesture of connection and confrontation. The aerial perspective and framed composition emphasize distance, observation, and duality. The two selves—dressed in mirrored simplicity—lean toward one another, suggesting a fragile equilibrium between opposition and companionship, tension and warmth.
